L.D. Bell High School's Sam Schaaf placed first in the state-wide Texas Citizen Bee on Saturday, April 16th. Sam placed first at the Region XI competition on April 2nd, to advance to the state competition which was held at the Texas Law Center/State Bar of Texas and the capitol building in Austin. The competition consisted of a 65 question multiple choice test, four rounds of oral questioning, and a civic conversation.
The Texas Citizen Bee is a statewide civic education program and competition which offers teachers and high school students (9th-12th grades) an exciting way to reach and study America's heritage. The competition assesses knowledge and application of the U.S. Constitution, important documents, people, issues, civic values and skills and a Bill of Rights Institute article/current events category. Citizen Bee is sponsored by Law Related Education and Bill of Rights Institute.
Congratulations to Sam on this prestigious academic achievement! He was awarded a scholarship of $1,000, as well as a wonderful, challenging experience. Sam plans on competing again next year as a senior!
