Twelve students from local schools participated in the 2017 Region 11 Citizen Bee. The event includes a 30-minute written exam; four rounds of oral questions focusing on the Constitution, people, documents, landmark Supreme Court cases, civic values and skills; and current events. The written exam score and the oral round scores were combined to determine the Region 11 winner.
L.D. Bell High School's Sam Schaaf (center), who earned first place, is no stranger to the event; he was the 2016 Texas Citizen Bee winner and will compete for the 2017 state title on April 29 in Austin, Texas. Second place went to Jennae Steggall (center left), also of L.D. Bell. Both students were supported by faculty sponsor Gina Swann.
