The HEB community recognized 33 students from L.D. Bell, Trinity, and KEYS High Schools at the 2017 Awards of Excellence dinner. Faculty at the high schools and the Buinger CTE Academy nominate students to represent each academic area, with KEYS faculty selecting one Student of the Year.
Every student recognizes a mentor teacher who had a significant impact on them. Very often the mentor teacher is someone who the student has had in a recent class. But sometimes, the student will ask an elementary teacher to take the stage.
The dinner highlights how closely knit the HEB community is. If a mentor teacher is unable to attend the awards dinner, the student's campus principal will stand on stage with the student being honored. If the student is unable to attend, a parent will stand in to accept the award. There are plenty of people to support the student and the teacher on this special evening.
The event is hosted by the HEB ISD Education Foundation. Their mission is to raise and award private funds and community resources to support HEB ISD's commitment to excellence in education. The Foundation, established in 1995, is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization guided by a volunteer board of directors who have a sincere interest in the success of students and staff.
